The Nike Element React 87, a style unveiled by Jun Takahashi in March during the Paris Fashion Week presentation for his Undercover label, has received its share of praise since its debut. And soon it can be added to sneaker collections worldwide.

The eye-catching model from Nike is executed with the brand’s latest React foam cushioning, and its design was inspired by the brand’s original Internationalist style from the 1980s and the Zoom Fly SP from 2017.

“People are drawn to the shoe because it has layers,” Darryl Matthews, Nike sportswear innovation designer, said in a statement. “It’s not a flat shoe, and the way it looks depends on the socks you wear. It’s like when Nike exposed the Air bag, except now we’re able to expose the inside of the shoe, too.”

But the shoe is not just aesthetically appealing; it has functional appeal that would please the tech fan, too.

To make it comfortable, Nike said it pressure-map-tested people who walk a lot throughout the day to show where feet feel the most fatigue. Then, the brand said, its designers drilled holes in those spots on running shoe soles and repeated that process with its React foam for added comfort.

The final product, according to Nike, is “proof that the new requires mastery of the old, command of the cutting edge and a healthy dose of old-fashioned ingenuity.”

The Nike Element React 87 arrives on June 21 via its SNKRS app in Asia, Latin America and Greater China. It also will debut on that date on its SNEAKRS app and select retailers in Europe.

In North America, the sneaker will be available starting July 14 via SNKRS and at select retailers. The shoes will come with a $160 price tag.
